What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a relative newcomer to New Zealand. The technique was first used in Europe and adopted by New Zealand in the late 1990s. Today, Microdermabrasion is used to remove sun-damaged skin lessen fine wrinkles, scars and dark spots on the skin.
Microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure popular in day spas, doctors' practices, and medical spas, in which the stratum corneum (dead outermost surface of the skin) is partially or completely removed by light abrasion. Different methods can be used but at TONIC we use what has been proven to be the most effective method which provides abrasion from jets of aluminum oxide crystals. Aluminium oxide is an inert compound and will not be absorbed or react with the skin. Particles and removed material are vacuumed off with the wand/handpiece through which the abrasive particles come. The procedure is not very painful and requires no anesthetic.
A course of several treatments is the most effective way to see visible changes to the skin.
Winter time is the ideal time to have the treatment done as the skin is more sensitive to UV exposure for several days after having the procedure done. If you are interested in enquiring about the procedure, just speak to any of our therapists to see if Microdermabrasion is right for you.
